Research Agenda
Introduction
Art is associated with originality and therefore may be seen to have little to do with research. And more often than not, Architecture falls under this general misconception. This ignores the fact that Architecture, in cognizance to its beginnings and main purpose, is intrinsically utilitarian. Thus the products of practitioners in this discipline not only express the client community’s highest aspirations, but are also intended to be used for specific human purposes. Therefore, if architecture is to relate to that community and remain relevant, its practitioners will need to be able to design and build structures that are in context with that community.
General Objectives
The discipline of Architecture is concerned with the introduction of new or alteration of existing built environments. However, change must not be desired only for its own sake. At some point a decision must be made on what to change and what to retain. Obviously this is not quite an easy judgment call. Thus, the academic program for training new architects and artists will need and call for research to support decisions of intervention programs leading to changes in the current environment(s). The main thrust of the research effort, as detailed in the specific objectives are as follows:
- Baselining the various environments
- Evaluation of analytical and planning methodologies
- Evaluation of presentation tools and developing applicants therefore
Specific Objectives
Architecture is an applied discipline directed to the purpose of professional practice. The research agenda will therefore focus on three (3) areas namely:
- Inventory (database build up) of past and/or existing environments
- The natural environment
- The economic )commercial) built-environment
- The socio-cultural environment
- Inventory and evaluation of Analytical and Planning Methodologies
Due to the emphasis on originality, a major proportion of design efforts has had to rely heavily on intuitive albeit archaic planning and design procedures. The profession has virtually ignored analytical and planning methodologies developed in other fields that may have application and relevance to architecture.
- Resource allocation techniques for spatial programming
- Psycho-social responses to changing physical environments, and human factors/ ergonomics applications to architectural design
- Emergent aesthetic perceptions of the globalizing client community and its relationship to traditional sensibilities.
- Evaluation/development of new building systems and materials
Inventory and evaluation of Presentation and Marketing methodologies/tools
- Computer application software (digitalization and animation)
- Model-building and storyboard presentations.
State of Research
- CAFA has hitherto been preoccupied with its academic role of training architectural professionals. Thus, to a large extend, most of the current instruction program of design is based more on the traditional intuitive approaches instead of applications of state-of-the-art methods.
- Capacity building – before field research can be initiated in the area of inventories of physical environments, the organizational structure of data bases on which the GIS is to be operate from need to be set-up. To this end, one of our faculty members has been de-loaded for the current semester.
Inventory of Research / Consultancy Projects
Inventory (database build-up) of past and/or existing environments
- “Poetry in Space”, an NCCA-funded Heritage Preservation documentation of Melva Rodriguez-Java
- Participation in multi-disciplinary surveys (GIS data-base) of the Talamban-Banilad area.
Inventory and evaluation of Presentation and Marketing methodologies
Anima products
Undergraduate terminal projects (architectural design of various facilities)
Areas of Expertise
Accreditation with Government accrediting agencies
The Bureau of Local Government Finance has accredited IPD and endorsed its services to pre-identified LGUs for the preparation of their sub-project under Community-Based Resource Management Project (CBRMP).
